My home State of Rhode Island has a unique flag. It has an anchor and the word “Hope” on it. So where did the idea for the flag come from? It, in fact, came from a passage in the New Testament portion of the Bible. In the Book of Hebrews, verse 6:19 it reads, “Hope is the anchor of the soul”!
As a former Navy chaplain, and disabled vet, who volunteered at 40 years old to go on active duty, and who’s also had to endure three right shoulder replacements (i.e., the third one being a “reverse” right shoulder replacement) as a result of my military service, I believe I know a little bit about hope.
The motto of a Navy chaplain is:
“Provide for our own.” In my case that meant being brought into the military to take care of fellow American Baptists.
“Facilitate for others.” This means also making sure you provide services for other faiths groups including Catholics, Jews, Muslims, etc.
Third, and finally, “care for all”. This means taking care of all servicemembers and their families regardless of them having a religious faith or not.

I learned a lot while in the military. Especially dealing with service members who have to deal with constant deployments, family separations, peacekeeping missions, and war. The stress can be overwhelming. And when that stress becomes overwhelming it can lead to something even more damaging; something called PTSD or Post-traumatic stress disorder.
Police, firemen and firewomen, emergency response workers, and health care professionals are the ones we usually think about when it comes to PTSD. But because of the events over the last year and a half due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, even the average everyday individual, including children, have become susceptible to PTSD.
We each face a variety of crises throughout our lives. It’s part of living. But what we’ve had to face recently, in many cases, fits the classic definition of PTSD.
Criteria A: Faced with a traumatic event, a person’s response is one of fear, helplessness, or horror.
Criteria B: The experience causes recurring dreams or recollections of the event.
Criteria C: The person then avoids activities, situations, or people who cause them to remember the traumatic event leading them to have reduced feelings and emotions.
Criteria D: One may have persistent symptoms of increased arousal, irritability, or anger, difficulty concentrating or finishing tasks, increased vigilance, and is easily startled.
Criteria E: The symptoms in Criteria B, C, and D must persist for more than a month.
Can anyone relate?

People today need hope. And I believe we, as a nation, can provide that hope. But the question is: “How?” I believe the words and ideas in the Declaration of Independence still hold the key.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (i.e., “and women”) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” In other words, Faith & Freedom.
We are victims of a different ideology today. The ideology of “Woke-ism”. As columnist Victor David Hanson puts it so perfectly: “When our elites are clueless about national debt, inflation, illegal immigration, crime, soaring gas prices, and a global pandemic, they can reassure themselves that at least they can cancel out…”, take your pick! Dr. Seuss, Mr. Potato Head, certain authors, certain speakers, certain social media folks or television personalities, or political opponents who they deem a threat to them and their power.
And that’s why I’m running for Congress! Because I will protect our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How? By growing our economy, protecting our culture, as well as protecting us physically. My opponent does not believe in these three tenets. He’s proved by the positions he’s taken over the years, the votes he’s made, and most importantly by his silence over the last year and a half as the pandemic has raged and the culture of “woke-ism” has emerged.
In these dark times we are called to look out for one another.
Blessings,
Ret. Chaplain Bob Lancia
